Jolene Garanzha Dry Points, Monotypes and Other Media

Artist Statement
My work is primarily figurative, featuring women and animals. I have recently added basic geometric shapes to the mix. I am sure there is a personal history associated with each of these elements, but it is unnecessary information for the purpose here. If someone wants to know the personal details about a piece I am happy to share, but I most enjoy it when someone is taken by a work because they bring their own story to it.

I love process and materials, even being controlled by the material. I rarely plan out a piece of work except for initializing the simple idea such as a cat with a dress on or a house with symbols in the windows, or a prostitute with a lovely hat. The initial idea is a basic form and also a receptacle for the medium, which then dictates the rest of the piece. With dry point, I find that I have to do a lot of wrestling with the tools and the metal in order to move through the piece, but that risk of losing control fascinates me. With monotype, I enjoy the mess.
